Barn Owls swallow their prey whole—skin, bones, and all. About twice a day, they cough up pellets instead of passing all that material through their digestive tracts. The pellets make a great record of what the owls have eaten, and scientists study them to learn more about the owls and the ecosystems they live in.

About to Land - Great Horned Owl

You can imagine how difficult it was to capture this moment on film. The bird is an owl, a great horned owl. All owls in North America have hidden ears accept the Great Horned Owl which has tufts on its head where the ears are. You can "feel" the air turbulance as this owl comes in to land next to you. Great Horned Owls, like other owls, are clueless about building nests. They use available structures to nest in, such as: stick nests of hawks, squirrel nests; small caves, ledges or crevices on cliffs, bridges, power lines, barns and old buildings, large flower pots on balconies, and a variety of nests created by humans from old tires, etc.

Before laying eggs, these clever birds scatter animal dung all about the entrance to their subterranean burrows; the result? Their version of food delivery; troops of dung beetles and other insects come marching, which the owls then catch and eat without ever leaving home. Pheasant Statue has a pheasant flying near to the ground. It's wings are extended, it's tail is fanned. The base has pieces of wood strewn on it. The feathers all over the pheasant have individual characteristics. Pheasants prefer to run and stay close to the ground.
