In the USA we only have one species of Mockingbird, the Northern Mockingbird. It is the State bird of: Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.
The white patches on the wings of the mockingbird are there to help the bird defend its territory. It will flash their patches. But, the most fascinating fact about mockingbirds is their ability to mimic sounds. In fact the name "mockingbird" means "many tongued mimic." I've head one mimic the sound of a car alarm. It will mimic the sound of other birds. It can "sing" parts of songs. Quite fascinating.
