Pileated Woodpecker is one of 22 woodpecker species in USA. It is the largest one and is 3 times longer than the small Downy Woodpecker. The shade of the head with the bright red is very distinctive and is an easy bird to identify. This photo shows the pileated on the side of a tree with its bill extended. The bird can drum close to 17 beats per second!

In the winter Pileated Woodpeckers roosts by itself. The male woodpecker often uses the same hole used for nesting; the female will create a new hole to sleep in. The Pileated Woodpecker rarely nests in the same tree twice.

A Wood Stork is flying with nesting material in its mouth. It takes the twigs to build a large stick nest in a tree. The nest is built by the male. Greenery is added to the nest to help insulate the nest. With blue skies this photo spotlights the wood stork with the black edges of its wings. The horizontal photo is large, measuring 20" long and 16" high. The XL size is 30" x 20".

Sad, 1/3 of wood stork babies never fledge - they die before they leave the nest.

One of the most beautiful and sought after birds in the United States is the Rosette Spoonbill. Bob, our photographer, caught this glorious photo. The rosette is a brillance of pink and you can clearly see the spoonbill shape of the bill. In fact, you can see a chip off the bill. As we age, humans experience hair loss. Roseate Spoonbills are familiar with balding too, but instead of losing hair they lose feathers from the top of their head as they get older.

The Baltimore Oriole is one of the prettiest birds who live in the United States. The brilliant orange is offset by the pure black making it easy to identify this bird in the wild. Our wildlife photographer took this photo. It's a large photo and could make a dull wall brighten with this oriole on its wall. Available as either 20 x 16" or 30 x 20" size.

Ever wonder how this pretty bird got named a "baltimore oriole"? It received its name from the resemblance of the male Baltimore Oriole's colors to those on the coat-of-arms of 17th century Lord Baltimore.

I have a personal story with an American Kestrel. After a bad storm, we found a baby bird in our driveway having no idea what type of bird it was. It was just a few days old. We fed it with an eye dropper and eventually the baby became an adult. My Mother layed newspaper on the floor behind the dining room door.  Sitting on top of the door "Perky" was quite at home. However, eating in the dining room was interesting. If we had hamburgers, we had to cover the top of the hamburger with one hand. If you didn't, Perky would swoop down, and remove the meat from the hamburger. You would be left with the bun. After a year, one day Perky flew through an open door and was never seen again.

The American Kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America. A kestrel can weigh the same as about 34 pennies. Their top flying speed is about 39 mph. 

Beautiful is not a word typically used to describe a Great Blue Heron. However, with the shades of blue in the background of this large photo, 16x20" or 30 x 20" beautiful photo of a Great Blue has been created.

The Great Blue Heron is a fairly common bird. It's found in all, if not most, of our States. Where there's water, it'll be. Even if it's your back yard Koa Pond. A friend created a Koa Pond and stocked it with fish. Less than a week later the pond had no fish....all had been eaten by a Great Blue. It is a large "wader" with a wingspan of 6-7 feet 

In Native American tradition the heron symbolizes wisdom and good judgment. Greece believes it is a messenger of the gods. And, if you watch a heron fish, you learn patience. Great messages.

The male American Goldfinch has two very different set of feathers. When it is non-breeding time of year, he is very drab with a brownish grey color over most of his body. However, when he wants to attact a lady in breeding season he morphs into a gorgeous bird seen in our photo. Brilliant yellow with black contrasts.

It's hard to imagine a bird being able to fly at over 200 mph...but the peregrin falcon can. It's the fastest animal in the world. Wow! As a photographer how do you get a photo of one? Our photographer did it! Large 16 x 20" photo. Or, XL 20 x 30".

The word peregrin means wanderer. The peregrin is known to travel over 15,000 miles a year in migration.

Mama Bear with Two Cubs - Exclusive 16 x 20 photo or an even larger 20 x 30 photo

A beautiful photo taken in the woods of these 3 bears. The close up photo shows the facial expressions, the curiousity of the cubs and the fur of their coats.  It's a view you and I will never see in person. But, we can enjoy via this photo.

Falcon Close-up Photo Art

For thousands of years falcons have been used in hunting. Falcons are thought to migrate as much as 15,500 miles each year. The tell-tale striped chest on this bird says it is a peregrine falcon. The peregrine is renowned for its speed. It has been clocked at 242 mph, which makes it the faster member of the animal kingdom. I was birding near the Cliff House in San Francisco when a Peregrin flew out of a tree above me, went close to my head, and landed up catching something on the beach. It WAS fast. Falcons are very important to the Middle East. In Dubai it's been known for the owner to purchase an airline ticket just so the falcon has it's own seat!
