A great egret has BLACK feet since it normally feeds by standing perfectly still. With black feet the prey do not see the feet. 

Egrets are symbols of good fortune, purity, and grace. These big white birds also symbolize new beginnings and prosperity with new endeavors.

Breeding Season transforms the Great Egret into this. Utterly sensational. You can see why so many egrets lost their lives when ladies used this plumage for their hats! It is simply gorgeous. Note also the green color at end of bill, that is yellow when not breeding.

The long, graceful plumes on Great Egrets are called aigrettes. They grow from the shoulder area to trail over the back. Each aigrette is composed of about 35 strands of slim feathers. Both male and female change plumage. How can a mate resist???

Cattle Egrets are the smallest egret in the US. It actually sleeps standing up - even when in water! This photo shows two cattle egrets in breeding plumage. Throughout the year, there is always a little orange on their head, but when in breeding plumage it's as glorious as in this photo. Large photo measures 16 x 20". XL photo 20 x 30"

The Cattle Egret is native to Africa and Asia, and began expanding worldwide in the 1800s, reaching North America in the early 1950s. After 70 years here, it is found primarily in the SE. Cattle Egrets may benefit the livestock industry by eating flies (and on rare occasions, ticks) from the bodies of cattle.

Falcon Close-up Photo Art

For thousands of years falcons have been used in hunting. Falcons are thought to migrate as much as 15,500 miles each year. The tell-tale striped chest on this bird says it is a peregrine falcon. The peregrine is renowned for its speed. It has been clocked at 242 mph, which makes it the faster member of the animal kingdom. I was birding near the Cliff House in San Francisco when a Peregrin flew out of a tree above me, went close to my head, and landed up catching something on the beach. It WAS fast. Falcons are very important to the Middle East. In Dubai it's been known for the owner to purchase an airline ticket just so the falcon has it's own seat!

This is one of our classic bull and bear bookends.

The animals are made from solid brass that shines when it catches the light. The brass is lacquered to help tarnishing. The bull stands 7 inch high, the bear 6 1/2 inch high which makes these bookends an inch shorter than the other pair of black marble bookends. The animals also have slightly different positions. Weight is 15 lbs.

It's hard to imagine a bird being able to fly at over 200 mph...but the peregrin falcon can. It's the fastest animal in the world. Wow! As a photographer how do you get a photo of one? Our photographer did it! Large 16 x 20" photo. Or, XL 20 x 30".

The word peregrin means wanderer. The peregrin is known to travel over 15,000 miles a year in migration.

This photo shows a beautiful view of birds and the bay as the sun sets. Have a dental patient focus on the photo to relax! Most of the definable birds are brown pelicans. The sky is a marvelous mixture of clouds and color. Our world class wildlife photographer got an award winning photo with this delight. While fishing for dinner, a brown pelican will fly up as high as 100 feet (30 meters), before folding back its wings and plunging into the sea. Sadly, at least 500 pelicans are killed each year in Florida from entanglement in fishing lines, etc.

A Wood Stork is flying with nesting material in its mouth. It takes the twigs to build a large stick nest in a tree. The nest is built by the male. Greenery is added to the nest to help insulate the nest. With blue skies this photo spotlights the wood stork with the black edges of its wings. The horizontal photo is large, measuring 20" long and 16" high. The XL size is 30" x 20".

Sad, 1/3 of wood stork babies never fledge - they die before they leave the nest.

Glorious Great Egret....stunning photo

Both the male and female egrets grow these awesome plumes. In fact, in 1886 each plume sold for $32/oz. Yes, 130 years ago! Back then that was twice the price of 2 oz of gold! In defense of the ladies who wore the plumes in their hats - the women WERE beautiful...but the poor bird. It came close to disappearing. Photo available in 2 sizes. 20 x 16" or 30 x 20".
